Imaging Science and the Discovery of Life Beyond the Solar System
Professor Jeff Kuhn is an internationally recognized scientist in theoretical and experimental astrophysics, currently working in Hawaii, USA. His research focuses particularly on the challenges associated with imaging techniques for large telescopes. He is involved in the design of various major telescopes, such as the “Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope and the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). Another area of his work is the study of life forms beyond the Solar System.
Jeff Kuhn will be in Bremen in early September, and we have successfully secured him for a lecture as part of Telescopium Lilienthal gGmbH. His original lecture topic is: “Imaging Science and the Detection of Life Beyond the Solar System.”
The fundamentals of telescope mirror manufacturing date back to Newton and Gregory in the 17th century. In an era of global satellite constellations and large astronomical telescopes, we should ask ourselves: What becomes possible if the cost of diffraction-limited optics drops from the current €250,000 to €10,000 per square meter?
This lecture will discuss current efforts to develop large-scale, kilometer-sized telescopes using new optical and mechanical technologies. These advancements may one day allow us to detect signs of life around a nearby star.
Der Vortrag wird am 14. September 2022 ab 19:00 Uhr im Schroetersaal (Murkens Hof) in Lilienthal, Klosterstraße 25 in englischer Sprache stattfinden. Dieser Vortrag ist übrigens als Auftakt einer ganzen Vortragsreihe unter dem Motto „Astronomie in Lilienthal – Geschichte und Perspektiven“ geplant. Der Eintritt beträgt 15 Euro.
Vita:
Jeff Kuhn earned his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton in 1981, with a research focus primarily on experimental and observational astrophysics. He has contributed to the design of several major telescopes, including the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope and early concepts for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT).
He was the founding director of the Advanced Technology Research Center at the University of Hawaii. He is a Sloan Foundation Fellow and a recipient of the Senior Humboldt Award.
More recently, his work has focused on the challenges of direct imaging with large optical systems.
